NSW Northern Region Slope Stability Workshop | Sancrox

IQA Slope Stability Workshop
The Slope Stability workshop has been designed to provide participants with knowledge relating to geotechnical awareness skills and management strategies to minimise the potential risk associated with slope instability and rock falls.

Date:
Thursday 1st September 2022
Times: 8.30am - 3.00pm
Venue: Hanson Sancrox Quarry | 78 Sancrox Rd, Sancrox|  Directions here

COURSE OVERVIEW

The potential for rockfalls and slope failures makes working near quarry walls, stockpiles and dump faces a hazardous task. As quarries develop over time, they usually get deeper and the overall slope angle becomes steeper which can increase the risk of rockfalls. Stockpiles and waste dumps contain unconsolidated material which can be subject to collapse.  Geotechnical awareness and skills to recognise and manage potential rockfall and batter collapse hazards are necessary to achieve an acceptable level of risk.

The Slope Stability workshop has been designed to provide participants with knowledge relating to geotechnical awareness skills and management strategies to minimise the potential risk associated with slope instability and rock falls. The potential for rockfalls and slope failures makes working near quarry walls, stockpiles and dump faces a hazardous task.  The best control for protecting people working near quarry faces is a development design that considers the site’s particular geological, geotechnical and geohydrological characteristics. This course will help participants understand the the basis of how to mine the quarry.

This is a special opportunity to complete the IQA Slope Stability training at the Hanson Sancrox Quarry that recently featured in the Resource Regulator Roadshow presentation showcasing the challenging Ground Strata and Slope Stability conditions presented onsite at Sancrox Quarry. The difficult and challenging ground conditions showcase most geotechnical failure mechanisms with multiple examples of practical solutions and controls to manage the risk of geotechnical hazards.

Who should attend:

The course is particularly relevant to:

  • Quarry Managers
  • Quarry Supervisors
  • Engineers

Learning Objectives:

  • A working understanding of the causes of instability in soils and rocks in quarries.
  • The ability to identify the different types of slope failure.
  • An increased awareness of inspections and risk controls in relation to excavations, overburden dumps, stockpiles and tailings dams.
  • Information on the roles and responsibilities of quarry workers for managing risks associated with geotechnical hazards.
  • Information on the requirements of Principal Hazard Ground Control Management Plans.

CPD hours:  6.5 hours | Technical Training

Facilitator:

Ralph Erni – BSc(Civil), MEng(Geotechnical), MIEAust, CPEng NER, RPEQ, APEC Eng, IntPE(Aus)
Ralph Erni is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer and Geotechnical Group Manager at Martens & Associates with more than 28 years of experience in civil engineering and geotechnical projects across Australia and internationally. Through his experience in construction and consulting environments, including high risk environments of rock tunnels; sand and rock quarries and power substations, he has invaluable understanding of geotechnical risks and has delivered effective geotechnical hazard risk management protocols, developed practical solutions to geotechnical slope instability problems and provided expert testimony in geotechnical and hydrogeological matters in the Land and Environment and Supreme Courts of NSW.
