The IQA Tasmanian Branch is will be holding an Industry Update Workshop & Dinner Meeting in Launceston.  The afternoon will also include a committee meeting.

This event will include a Workshop and Industry Update, followed by a TAS Committee Meeting.  Stay on and enjoy Pre-Dinner Drinks and a social dinner to be held at the same venue.  Accommodation is available onsite subject to availability.

The workshop will provide an overview on Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS), common problems and requirements in the Worksplace, Exposure Standards and Principal Hazard Management Plans.  The workshop will highlight the importance of understanding the impact of silica, information to support improvements and current compliance requirements. Note: Safe Work Australia published the new Workplace Exposure Standards for airborne contaminants such as crystalline silica.  The new crystalline silica WES is 0.05mg/m3.  The previous WES was 0.1 mg/m3.  

We strongly encourage you to attend this session to gain an insight into the changes to the Workplace Exposure Standard which is critical for staff in positions of responsobility in quarries and learn what is needed in your Principal Hazard Management Plans.

  • Incidents

  • Common issues with dust management in quarries

Pam Atkinson – Occupational Hygienist  | WorkSafe Tasmania, Department of Justice
Pam will provide further details on:

  • Limitations of airborne sampling
  • Imminent reduction in WES for Respirable Crystalline Silica to 0.05
  • X rays v CT scans for detecting silicosis
  • Relevant findings of national dust disease taskforceWhat a “best practice” dust management program looks like.


Kylie Fahey - CEO IQA
Kylie will provide an overview of new training opportunities and general update on the IQA

Social Networking Dinner

Dinner and drinks will be held at the same venue at Three Steps on George Restaurant with pre-dinner drinks starting at 5:45pm.
Note: dinner & dinner drinks will be at individual's own expense.

Three Steps on George was originally the Launceston Church Grammar School Gymnasium.  The building has been tastefully redecorated with hand stenciling and sponged finishes.  Join the dinner and enjoy the ambient environment and intimate restaurant set in the historical building.

Presenter Bios
Andrew Tunstall is the Chief Inspector of Mines and Major Hazards and has worked in the Tasmanian mines inspectorate for the past 13 years. Before this, he was employed as the mining manager at the Mt Lyell copper mine and the Henty gold mine on Tasmania’s west coast and in a number of mining engineering and explosives-related roles in Australia and overseas. Andrew manages a small team of mines inspectors who have worked closely with the mining and quarrying industries over the years to reduce risk at the sites and improve worker safety. Andrew is a graduate of the Camborne School of Mines in the UK and holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering.

Pam Atkinson is a Senior Work Health and Safety Consultant with WorkSafe Tasmania. She has graduate and post graduate qualifications relevant to occupational hygiene and health and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene.  Pam has spent over 20 years as a practicing occupational hygienist in industry, research and consultancy in Australia and the UK, including seven years as an occupational hygienist at a nuclear fuel installation. She has research interests in the prevention of dust disease, including dust management and health monitoring.

IQA Event Cancellation Policy

  1. Cancellation or Postponement by the IQA

    1.1.An IQA event can be an event held in person or virtually. An IQA event is any activity hosted by the IQA and may include Branch events, golf days, site tours or education activity such as workshops and webinars. Where circumstances force the IQA to cancel an event, a refund, limited to the amount paid, will be issued.
    1.2.Where circumstances force the IQA to postpone an event, a credit will be held for any fees paid and applied to the same event when rescheduled. If a participant is unable to attend the rescheduled event or the event is subsequently cancelled, a refund, limited to the amount paid, will be issued.

  2. Cancellation by the Attendee
    2.1.Cancellations received prior to seven (7) days out from the event, or on or before the advertised cutoff date of the event, will receive a refund, limited to the amount paid.

    2.2.Cancellations received within seven (7) days of the event or after the advertised cutoff date are not entitled to a refund. Paid registrations can be transferred to other persons from the same organization. Transfers of registration will be accepted up until 48 hours prior to the event.
    2.3.Some IQA events such as the national conference, H&S conferences and face to face workshops will have event specific terms and conditions. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure they are familiar with any specific terms and conditions relating to an event.
    2.4.If a registered attendee fails to attend (in person or virtually) on the day of the event, the person is not eligible for a refund.
    2.5.Any request for a refund or substitution must be made in writing to [email protected]
    2.6.All refunds and credits are to be approved by the CEO or Finance Manager.
